What the planner is
Most Year 5 families do not fail for want of effort. They fail because the plan lived in somebody's head, went vague around October half term, and turned into a series of decisions taken at half past seven in the evening when everyone was tired. A plan on paper, stuck to the side of a cupboard, survives that. A plan in your head does not.
This is a planner rather than a timetable. It does not tell you which page to do on which night, because nobody who has not met your child could honestly do that. What it does is lay out the year in the three chunks that actually matter, say plainly what each of them is for, and then give you a weekly grid to fill in yourself.
- One page per term. Autumn, spring and summer, each with a short account of what that term is for in a Year 5 house and what should not be happening yet.
- A weekly rhythm you complete. Monday to Sunday, with the time, the activity and a box to tick. Fill it in in pencil, because it will change.
- Space for the goals you set. Ruled lines under "This term I want to", so the aim is written down rather than assumed.
- An honest "watch for" list. Two or three signals per term that tell you the plan is going wrong before a mock result does.
- Designed for A4. Print it, or save it as a PDF and keep it on a phone.

Who it is for
Written for a family whose child is in Year 5 now, or who will be in September. It assumes no prior knowledge of the 11 plus and it assumes you are busy.
It is also useful a year early. Year 4 parents often want to know what is coming before deciding whether to commit to any of it, and reading the summer term page in advance is a far better basis for that decision than a sales page. If your child is younger still, what is worth doing in Year 3 is a shorter and much less demanding list.
